An Interview with Cecilia León de la Barra Vargas, product designer from Mexico City

By Oliver Spies

Cecilia, here in your studio you have a turquoise couch.  Did you get it yourself?

No, I didn‘t, it was left behind by the previous tenant.  Turquoise wouldn‘t exactly be my first choice for a couch, though I do like bright, cheerful colors very much. To me, every color makes a statement, each stands for a certain feeling or emotion. Right now, I would like to make everything brightly colored in a variety of shades. That‘s why I often work with brightly colored material, such as plastic cords...

Here in Mexico, we have so many “design“ articles in gray and black. Until recently, those were the only colors that people liked. With the increasing popularity of current Mexican design, this trend is now changing.

The design show “Diseno Mexico“, will finally demonstrate a clear break away from the conventional. There will be nothing there of the old arts and crafts tradition. Mexican design nowadays is young, reflective, and innovative. I‘m really looking forward to my future as a designer here in Mexico.
