Living in today's world, where color and design have became a rather individual expression of our personalities and our way of thinking and living, inspiring industrial product designers and stimulating their creative senses is not limited to introducing new colors and finishes. Awakening their muse also extends to naming these colors and special finishes in a way that memorably resonates with an original background concept.
In pursuit of providing product design engineers in the domestic appliance sector with a (somewhat bizarre) way to trigger their ingenuity when specifying new colors and finishes in their sketches, I have gone through a creative process myself to come up with the names of the colors of the "Express Yourself" color selection from Jotun Powder Coatings.
Convenience, Technology and Innovation
The idea of daring to explore the possibility of using new colors in the domestic appliance sector, widely dominated by white, preoccupies me. I see household appliances as allowing design engineers, costumers and consumers to express their personalities by using color positively as a commonly understood way of expressing character. After all, we are all looking for convenience, technology and innovation. We want modern, highly energy-efficient appliances that provide more innovative design while matching our lifestyles.
Tapping into Emotional Expressive Effects
The kitchen space is developing into part of the living and dining areas. Consumers want to incorporate special, soft shimmers and finishes - evocative of scintillating emotional moments in their hectic lives - and unusual colors, hoping to capture a manifestation of their restless state of mind and thereby to convey the message of their individuality.
Colors Packed with Inspiration
As a marketer who is also an artist/painter, I imagine industrial designers approaching their workbenches in the same way I approach a canvas with a new idea. The canvas! The easel! My muse! The love affair with colors! The explicit expression of a vision! The artwork!
My idea was to activate the self-expression of industrial designers by supporting them with an out-of-the ordinary tool, comprising a selection of colors and packed with inspiration for their new product lines.
The Express Yourself powder coating color selection, specially designed for domestic appliances - but also appropriate for metal furniture and fixtures - provides inspiration through its presentation, its relationship to art and its remarkably bizarre color names. After all, conceptualizing an appliance is a work of art!
The selection includes fourteen colors, drawn from bright yellows and warm reds to classic whites and blue. To create visual delight, I divided it into five categories.
1. Unpredictable Resurgence of Luminescent White
Includes two whites and a special effect finish. It is reminiscent of the days of glamour, elegance and luxury. It provides free expression going beyond the self.
Chimera: a luminescent and elegant velvety white, suggestive of a grotesque product of the imagination.
Albertstein: a blushing rosy white, indicative of excessive wild intelligence.
Cold Scent: an aromatic, silverish special effect reminding of Alpine mountains.

2. Spontaneous Creativity
Includes two special effect metallic finishes. It is intuitive and instinctive and denotes things happening without efforts. It is designed to provide long flashes of creative moments.
Right Side of the Brain: a bubbly, alluring and enchanting champagne effect.
Idea in a Bottle: a captivating brandy effect.
