Onwards, making trails to Australia, on our quest to understand design culture the world over. My new favorite design website is the DG Design Network, which calls itself “a wayfinder for all things creative” and offers itself as an inspiration resource along with great, well-researched articles.
For architecture, we highlight Architecture Australia, a scholarly compendium of the flourishing architecture scene Down Under. Industrial designers should check out Curve, a magazine dedicated to a deeper understanding of design and trends.
This month, we combine our regular listings for online furniture and materials resources with Architonic, which handily combines both functions within its slick site design. Their database contains more than 45,000 architectural and interior design products and materials, while the recently launched News & Trends section complements the offering with articles on the world of design.

Set in Charlotte, U.S.A., the American Coatings Show & Conference 2008 will extend a particularly warm Southern welcome at the Charlotte Convention Center from June 2 to 5, 2008. The biennial show will have more than 320 exhibitors and an excellent program of presentations. Visitors will have the chance to find out about all the products and services available for coating raw materials, laboratory, production and packaging equipment, testing and measuring equipment, environmental protection and safety at work, as well as the latest developments and innovations at the Product Presentation forum. The conference offers 72 lectures distributed over 12 panel sessions, more than 40 poster sessions, 6 pre-conference tutorials and the presentation of the first American Coatings Award. This is the largest event for the American cindustry and is not to be missed
We talked about the recent redesign to U.S. banknotes in “X” Marks The Spot! #7. Now the United Kingdom is making its own radical change to its … change. In a move billed as “The Biggest Coin Event in British History Since Decimalisation”, the Royal Mint will release new designs for the coinage of the U.K. by 26-year old competition winner Michael Dent over the summer.

The XYMARA™ Design Award is running, with full steam ahead! Just last month, the Jury met for the first time to get to know each other and to plan out the judging process under the leadership of Chris Lefteri. We’re all excited to see the entries coming in! If you’re a design student, we hope you considering taking part! We think the prizes we and our partner sponsors (L’Oréal, Material ConneXion, RENOLIT and Vodafone) are offering offer real value to you in terms of gaining experience at pre-eminent design studios and we look forward to being able to invite you to our award ceremony in London at 100% Design in September!
Lastly, the blogosphere has been full of the work of Michael Arndt, who has spent the past six and a half years building a full-scale model Mercedes-McLaren F1 in his kitchen … out of matchsticks! All told, 956,000 matchsticks were used and 1,686 tubes of glue. You can see all the pictures here, and the original article (in German) here.
It seems there’s a whole sub-culture dedicated to making things out of little disposable pieces of wood: other recent items which have come to our attention include Patrick Acton’s amazing matchstick model of the city of Minas Tirith (from the Lord of the Rings films) and a canoe made of disposable chopsticks.
