![]() | Unique is the only word to describe the venue for the Istanbul Design Week, which sets the scene for the events and impressions to be enjoyed during the seven days between September 4 and 10. |
Located on the Old Galata Bridge, the Istanbul Design Week (IDW) breathes life back into the century-old bridge that had fallen into disuse after a fire in 1992. Since 2005 the IDW has provided a venue for production companies, designers, opinion leaders, young talent, professionals and design fans to meet and take part in the essence of design.

IDW is the platform for the work of selected designers and design agencies, for workshops, conferences and performances and for exhibits that are all the more extraordinary given the environment within which they are shown. IDW enjoys a “Sea Surface Exhibition Area” that extends the square footage available and allows selected installations to float tantalizingly before visitors’ eyes.

IDW is the perfect place for production companies and designers to meet and make international connections. They are joined by non-governmental organizations, universities, industry representatives as well as small and large companies. Exhibits are to be seen in five categories: Industrial Product Design, Communication Design, Fashion Designs, Environmental Design as well as Design and Engineering. Special exhibitions show the work of IDW visitors from other cultures. In previous years these visitors included Twinkle Twinkle from Britain, the Opos Design Group from Italy as well as Global Local from Helsinki, Finland.

According to Daniel West from icon magazine: “Sitting astride two continents and blessed with a striking architectural heritage, Istanbul has been a heavyweight cultural destination for millennia. As an annual conduit, meeting point and record of Turkish creativity, Istanbul Design Week is destined to play a key role in the formation of a unique design aesthetic.”
