For my Milan adventures this year, I betook myself away from the main furniture fair at the Rho-Fiera exhibition center and sought out the new and the upcoming at the buzzing Zona Tortona. Here are some notes from my visit …
First stop: the ABC - AUTHENTIC BELGIAN CREATIVITY exhibit at the Spazio Herno & Studio Bosio.

This chair-table unit was a favorite for its clean lines and proportions: B-Uro by Anita Nevens for Colect.

![]() | I found these sleek and severe chairs – Fab-M by Fabiaan Van Severen – stunning, but forgot to try sitting in them! Pacaya Panels by Adriaan Debruyne for HELBIG aluminium nv. The cool part is the illuminated pattern in the glass – which is unfortunately not very visible in the photo. Wending my way through the tiny streets, I explored the many makeshift exhibition spaces of the area … |

More rapid prototyping: Polymer by Antje Bott for Niessing – with its precise, mathematically determined form, the entire necklace can be folded up into a single block.

Marcio Kogan’s piece for Haaz Gallery’s “BLOCK: Turkish Marble Meets Design” exhibit, which featured marble as the basic material from which 18 designers carved out their individual statements.

The gorgeous, luxurious, airy Dot Show lamp by Gonnette Smits for Muurbloem – a personal favorite from the event.

The designer really wanted to talk about his Sofia coathanger but I really liked these Louise Tripod Glasses by Joine’s Maarten Baptist for Umbra/U+.

There was something very punk rock and very “now” about the iconoclastic fluorescence daubs on Versailles Fluo by Selab for Seletti.

I guess skull symbolism is still in fashion … for the moment! The Skulls by Selab and various artists for Seletti.

It was in a very understated showroom, but I liked the design and the color of the lomo chair by [B]crea.

These Yin Yang chairs with bronze and platinum colored fibers by Nicolas Thomkins for DEDON must have been comfy, going by the reaction of the visitors …

60 m2 wall installation using “Bertech”, a strong, renewable, biodegradable construction material based on paper, by Sergio Perrero for C.P. Company and Stone Island. Interestingly – but sadly – I couldn’t find any reference to this material on the web!
The next “big” experience was at Maarten Baas’s exhibit, cunningly disguised as a car repair workshop. The exhibit was a bit of a “greatest hits” collection, showcasing highlights from the designer’s career, as well as his latest work.

First shown at Design Miami 2007, Chrome Clay Fan for Moss and Chrome Clay Chair by Maarten Baas are chrome plated versions of the hand-modeled Clay furniture series.
