Plastic chair in wood (made of elm) and "Chinese Objects Object" (made of camphor) by Maarten Baas for Shanghai’s Contrasts Gallery explore the tension generated when an object’s form and the material used offer conflicting interpretations.

No Greatest Hits package would be complete without the original prototype for Maarten Baas’s Smoke Chair, also on display
Off next to the latest iteration of the Swarovski Crystal Palace, designed to evoke a night-time wonderland.

First up, the Fragments room divider and Ellipsis sculptural lights by Arne Quinze.

Another favorite: Globe by Studio Job –Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel. The globe is 175 cm in diameter and encrusted with 500,000 Swarovski crystals.
UPDATE: read our interview with Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel of Studio Job here.

Monumental – in the most subtle sense. The serene and moving Eternal by Tokujin Yoshioka is comprised of 41 pieces, representing Yoshioka’s age.

Spring Blossom and Night Blossom by Tord Boontje and Light Sock by Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
After the glittering intensity of the Crystal Palace, it was a relief to enter the MINDCRAFT exhibition set up by Danish Crafts. Can design make you feel good? Here was definitely design-to-cheer-you-up …

The playful, sculptural Textile Stone by textile designer Pernelle Fagerlund is felted from 100% pure new wool.

Holloware inflatable bowl by jeweler Kim Buck.

Bistro Light upholstered chair by Ditte Hammerstrøm. UPDATE: Read our interview with Ditte Hammerstrøm!

Swirls, a lamp element, by textile designer Astrid Krogh. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take a good picture of the installation – which was formed of multiple Swirls filling a wall – this is a promotional image of a single element.
Off, then, to the Nhow Hotel, which housed a few exhibitions in its floors and corridors (probably to the annoyance of its guests ..!).

Colorful, sculptural lamps like molten wax (but actually made of methacrylate): Medusa by Jacopo Foggini.

Tuttobene consigned their young designers to the crypt, to be walked over by passers-by, as part of their FOCUS! theme.

Smoky, mysterious, cool: the GHOST Collection by DRIFT.

Quelcheresta (What remains) by Romolo Stanc – an electroluminescent lamp representing the light that remains outside the emptiness of the lamp itself – part of his Riflessioni su mia Nonna (Reflections upon my Grandmother) collection.
Finally, exhausted by relentless design, I trekked into the city to meet up with our friends from NEL. Their show was based on the idea of the Ciudad Satélite – the modern industrial satellite town.

Here were a few new pieces, including these Torres de Satélite (Satellite Towers) bookshelves inspired by the overall theme.
