Held each year in a different location as part of a packaging trade fair, the WorldStar Packaging Awards are sponsored by the Swedish-based World Packaging Organization (WPO). The WPO also provides a jury with 22 representatives from the WPO as well as one representative from the International Packaging Press Organization.

Entries are invited in the categories of consumer, transport or industrial packaging. The 2006 awards will also include a World Student Star competition to promote creativity in new packaging design and encourage students to think about how to meet new global challenges in product protection and enhancement. This year’s awards are to be held in Istanbul, Turkey.

All the entries submitted to WorldStar have already won national and/or regional recognition from a packaging body and WorldStar’s aim is to establish one standard that takes into consideration regional and cultural differences and economies around the world. The rationale and economics of production also play an important role during the judging process.

The 2005 awards in Prague in the Czech Republic attracted 294 entries from 29 countries. Of these, 146 were selected as winners and five of these were also nominated for the President’s Award in acknowledgement of special qualities in their packaging solutions.

A number of entries submitted by the China National Export Commercial Packaging Research Institute won awards. The products demonstrated differing approaches to packaging using, among others, recycled paper, unusual packaging approaches such as a back opening, imagery that calls on Chinese culture as well as exacting local handicrafts such as painting on the interior of glass containers.

The 5-liter blue pet bottle of mineral water from Aguas Ouro Fino was distinguished with President’s Award. Its round shape with a flat bottom and short neck makes it an attractive object that can sit happily on any table and also decants water without spillage.
