An interview with Luis Pons, architect and interior designer, Miami

By Oliver Spies

Luis, you work as an architect and artist in Miami, where the real estate market is booming. Does this in particular offer you good opportunities to create sophisticated architecture‘

What‘s being built in Miami is mainly hotels and highrise apartment buildings. Of course this creates a demand for customized interior designs. However, the problem is that nearly all owners have moved here from far away, which is reflected in the style of their homes. Nearly all styles from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean are imitated. Local characteristics and possibilities remain unused and a “Miami style“ like in the 30s can thus not develop.

Which are the Miami characteristics and possibilities“

The proximity of the ocean, the pleasant climate, and above all, the good light and fresh air, you‘ll only find here in Florida.“

Does the daylight affect your work“ Especially, in the way you use colors?

Of course. For example, pure white is no topic here because of the brightness. Also, the perception of other colors is different than elsewhere. Shade is very important. All that is shady is perceived to be pleasant. I prefer toned colors that resemble clear colors in the shade. Also, softly pastelled colors – not simply whitened, but in fact grayed.

Yet your office equipment of inflatable furniture, for which you are known, is light green. Why is that?

I find this light “plastic green“ very unusual. In general green is used very little in current designs. Maybe this is why I like it, or maybe because it is fresh and natural. Plastic looking natural, that sounds a little bizarre, but there is something in it, an element of natural freshness, like here in my office. That fits my concept.
