Ciba XYMARA
Dear Xymara Reader

We've had lots of great entries for our XYMARA™ Design Award - thank you for taking part! The designs we've seen so far for mobile phones, furniture and packaging have been stellar! Since many of you have said you're having trouble completing your projects in time due to the summer holidays and we know you've all been working hard creating great, wonderful things for us, we've decided to extend the submissions deadline! The NEW closing date for submissions is Thursday, 31 July 2008.

We're not short of XYMARA-related news this month! Hot on the heels of the launch of the fifth edition of our iF Gold Award-winning online design magazine, INMYX, we now bring you full details of our very prestigious nomination for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany (the "Designpreis")!

But, of course, we've also been checking out the wider world of design and trends on your behalf this past month. We've interviewed iconic (pun intended!) illustrator Jean Tuttle to learn more about her and her work. We've reported on three very different shows in three very different locations: Luxe Pack, the luxury packaging trade fair in New York; Dwell on Design, the lifestyle and decoration conference and exhibition in Los Angeles; and Design Miami/Basel, the high-end design event in Basel. And we also featured an in-depth investigation on the meaning of texture

… very relevant to my personal material of the moment, concrete, which has made further appearances in a few of our articles recently: in our interviews with star-young designer Max Lamb and 10 Liter Design, in our INMYX 5 article on the work of architect Samuli Naamaka and in our monthly column on all that's fascinating in design at the moment, X Marks The Spot!

Hope you enjoy all our articles! Next month: reviews of Tendence 2008 and the Design Annual, more interviews with star designers, and fabulous new XYMARA trend stylings! Take care and see you soon!

Vibrant and Fast - More and More Urbanites Resort to Using Skateboards as Means of Transportation

It's July 2008 - watch out for an unexpected sight: as of late, skateboards have become just as much a part of the usual rush hour mayhem in European cities as bicycles, motorbikes and cars. Benefiting from needing much less space than other vehicles, skaters meander between rows of cars brought to a halt by inevitable traffic jams. Some let themselves be towed by cars for short distances and skating on the sidewalk is still an option when everything else comes to standstill...

 Functionality Meets Humor
t is hard to miss the humoristic elements that London-based designer Oscar Narud lends his products and creations. Drawing from an early age and being the "keen observer of people who enjoys picking up on their various rituals and habits" that he is, he discovered product design as a way "of channelling my drawing" and "a route to realizing a lot of my observations and ideas into physical objects." ...
