Trends: 3 INs, 3 OUTs

3 INs

Localization
Clothing, furnishings, food

In Barcelona underwear is almost always purchased in a traditional local store. Local manufacturers with direct sales outlets are almost always preferred over clothing manufacturers from abroad.

Green thinking, green living
Architecture, design, food

Example:

Reusable wooden boards (remnants from pattern cuts) are incorporated into high-priced “designer furniture” in NYC; recycled wood is now considered a hip surface material (Urban Outfitter, NYC).

Generation crossover
Architecture, lifestyle, values

Example:

Traditional restaurants in Berlin, Barcelona. Artists, designers and architects are showing a 50% drop in profit. Authentic venues are in. Awareness of family and tolerance for other generations are becoming more important. Life experience and tried-and-true solutions are recognized as the basis for “creative design”.

3 OUTs

Smoking
After 4000 years people are finally getting the message about that cancer problem.

Multitasking
When having a relaxing meal at a nice restaurant, who needs to hear their neighbor’s business conversation? And it’s painful to watch someone dribbling his or her lunch all over his or her laptop keys. Take a break. It’s the real mood and efficiency enhancer.

Mass consumer products
Visible individuality has become a luxury!
Every person is different. Why should we all look the same?
